Today we introduced a new mapping activity, finding a location with coordinates on a grid. We have been doing a mini unit on mapping this month (and into February) and some of the skills we have worked to develop include;

  • Spatial Awareness and Thinking: Developing a mental map of surroundings, understanding the relationship between objects, and grasping the concept of "location".

  • Coordinate Systems: Identifying and using grid references to locate specific points on a map.

  • Navigation and Direction: Utilizing a compass rose (north, south, east, west) and following paths, including understanding clockwise and anticlockwise movements.

  • Map Interpretation: Understanding legends, symbols, and keys to interpret geographic features.

  • Scale and Distance: Measuring and calculating distances between objects using a map scale.

  • Logical Thinking and Problem Solving: Planning routes, troubleshooting, and applying logical, step-by-step reasoning (e.g., in coding games or navigation).

  • Data Representation: Translating real-world, 3D locations into a 2D, organized grid forma

Its amazing to see the Rabbits do so well with these activites and learn and become more comfortable with these important skills - especially in the age of Google Maps!
