Squirrels - May 7

Today was a rainy spring day, but full of magical things. We brought black sunflower seeds, which Ms. Jessie says are the favorite seeds of the chickadees to tempt them. Taking a handful we all stood around the trees and waited for the chickadees to come. When they showed up they flitted around, watching us before flying down to grab a seed out of our hands, and a lucky few had a chickadee land on their hand (or boot!). We also filled our birdfeeders up that are still hanging near our pick up spot and saw a robin enjoying the rainy day. At our spot we started trap city, putting up a tarp for us to sit under and store our backpacks away from the rain and then played fire in the woods. A different name for octopus tag, the squirrels were eager to play and especially be it. We enjoyed a snack under our tarp and read two books, one about animal homes and one about the order that flowers come up in spring in Alberta. The squirrels liked calling out what flower they thought was on the page, and calling out the name of the animals. A quick free time lapsed into a house game with little wooden dolls and that all the squirrels wanted to play. Cone game was played, with teams this time with a narrow win by Ms. Jessie and then Ms. Mel had some tricky would you rather we had to decide. Waffles or Pancakes? Dogs or Cats? We ended our day with a guided tour from Joe, Maeve's older brother from the Red Foxes class, showing us iconic bluff locations we hadn't seen and showing us edible plants. Thanks Joe! Right before pickup we played Where's my dinner? and today we outsmarted Ms. Jessie, working as a team instead of just grabbing the dinner. See you next week Squirrels!
