Squirrels - Feb 27

upstreamforestschool

Today, with only four students we went adventuring. Our first stop was zombie hill to do some sliding down the hill. It was difficult to climb because of the ice underneath, but we figured it out with some tips from Maeve and even finding some longer but easier routes that some of us preferred. After some sliding we continued on through the bottom forest route that we haven't explored before. It was fun to climb through the bushes and around the trees and we popped out at the bike track. Last week when everything melted and was wet, the bike track got soaked. When the cold weather hit everything froze making the bike track perfect for sliding down the jumps. After thoroughly exploring we found the best slide, mice and rabbit tracks and a tree to climb. The squirrels loved sliding down the icy jump, but before sliding down you had to get up. We experimented with different methods such as going around, using the bushes and trees and walking up the side. Some were more successful than others, but it was worth it for the epic slides. There was a fallen down tree that some of the squirrels climbed and tested their climbing skills at getting down the steep drop at the end. Alden found the best method of standing on one branch while holding another. One feature of the bike track is a treehouse and the squirrels took turns climbing to the lower level and even finding a house underneath. Our adventure continued, past a fort, through an alley and to the cabin for a snack, as hands get cold when you take your mitts off to eat. We read a story about a happy lion and played a game where you have to guess what object or animal is being described without saying its name. For the rest of class we played on the ice slide across from the cabin. We had to be aware of others (and trees!) when sliding down to avoid collisions, but it was bumpy, fast and fun.
