Squirrels - April 16

Today we had the perfect snow for snowballs....So that is what we did. The squirrels started making big snowballs by rolling them in the snow up and down the hill. As they got bigger we recruited the older class (Red Foxes) for help pushing them. They grew and grew and grew, until we had the crazy idea of making a giant snowman! The only problem was getting the middle on as it was SO heavy. Alden thought it might just be impossible, but we engineered a ramp to roll it onto the bench. From there we pulled it with a tarp, pushed with our feet, shoved it with our hands and with 12 kids and 4 teachers we did it! The Red Foxes added a head, and we decorated it with a carrot nose, rock eyes and pine cone buttons. It might just be forest school's biggest snowman ever! When the older class continued to their spot, we read a book about a boy rescuing a hurt eagle and ate our snacks together. Then we got to learn a new game, where a symbol is called out and you have to run around searching for a mini pilon with the number six, the red telephone or the bathtub! You have to rely on your memory and speed to get to the cone first, because if you get the cone you get to keep it and whoever has the most at the end wins! We also set up our bird feeders we painted last week, and scattered the rest of the birdseed around. Now we are on the lookout for birds, and Ms. Jessie taught us a game to recognize bird calls. You have to listen to the call and determine what bird it is and run to the correct spot. It was a little tricky to remember the call of the robin, but we are getting really good at remembering the chickadees call! Cheese burger or chickadee, dee, dee. We finished our day with some freetime; playing with snow molds in the sticky snow, snow baseball and the frisbee  hoops! See you next week!
