Rabbits - September 3

upstreamforestschool

What a wonderful morning we had together. It was so nice to see some familiar faces return, and have some of our last-year squirrels 'graduate' to become Rabbits. We started with some of our core routines, a walk up the hill to our spot and a general once over of our area to complete our 'safety check'. Some name games and coyote / mouse helped break the ice, but we were soon distracted by a tiding of magpies and decided to follow the raucous cawing to see what was going on. We traipsed through the brush to observe a juvenile hawk with a magpie in his mouth and a number of very upset magpies. The magpie was later dropped, but appeared to make a recovery from its attack because it flew away when some of the Red Fox class members tried to get a closer inspection of the downed bird. Exciting stuff!

We began working on a class flag, with each member of our class working on a felt patch that will be later sewed onto our flag, which bears our collective name.

During snack and story we read a beautiful book by the author Robert Bateman, which reminded us to look careful at the details of nature and wonder in its beauty.

Free time allowed some of the new (and old) friendships to blossom. We started a carving project which will take a few classes to complete. Today we just had to cut our sticks into desired lengths using the hand saws, and sand down any rough areas.

Our class concluded with a 'sit spot' where we cut the long grass and formed little bundles or dolls to bring home with us as a momento of our class.
