The Owls had a great day back at forest school! We are excited to bring in some younger kids into our parliament of Owls, while keeping some of our older Owls.
We started the day with some getting to know each other games, which quickly turned into a timing game to challenge the Foxes with. The Owls spent time catching up and making new connections before we got into a game of card tag. This game was spread out and challenged the Owls physically and made them concentrate on strategy in a team dynamic. It was good fun and a nice way to bring the Owls together. We played for a while!
After the game we challenged the Owls with chipping a ball of ice to retrieve bandanas. It proved difficult. Chisseling was not that great and so they decided to throw the ice ball onto the pathway from different heights. They tried using the hot pavement, direct sunlight, but eventually decided that it would be a waiting game to allow the ball to melt.
While the Owls took turns working with the ball of ice we found a shady place to make some wooden grass whistles. Everyone had practice with knives and it was a sweet chance to quietly talk amongst one another while trying to figure out the small nuances of making the whistle work.
We were pushing the morning, but walked down to the orchard where we picked a lot of pairs. Perhaps a little too many, but we have plans for them next class. With our pears in hand we headed over to a shady spot on Princess Island to have lunch. On the way we were stopped by watching a massive drill work on memorial drive. Super interesting stuff!
After lunch the Owls were tasked with a team challenge to tie an overhand knot as a class. Using a long rope and everyone in the class they figured it out and moved on to a square knot.
Getting hot we headed down to the river to cool off and have free time. Minows were caught. Buckets were tossed. The rocky beach was explored and we made s'mores with a solar oven! A tasty treat to keep us going for the walk back over the peace bridge.
Once we were back we had a few minutes reserved to start our 2024/45 journals before heading off home.
