Owls, May 24th

The rain has brought so much greenery and colour to the bluff that after some football drills and football plays explained by Mira, the Owls went off to forage for a feast. They started out with picking and eating caragana flowers aka: banana peppers. We're pretty sure that more were eaten directly from the tree than collected for our salad, but really that is always the best way to forage!

The Owls foraged alfalfa, creeping bell flower, young goats beard, mustard, the elusive lambs quarter and they even found wild asparagus! What a delicacy. There were some new plants that we were not able to identify with 100% certainty. Mrs. Lea showed everyone what Leafy Spurge looks like - it's all over the bluff and it's milk can make you itchy. She also said that although it's declared a noxious weed in Alberta it is actually a native species. We also had a rare sighting of the Bluffalo!

For the afternoon we collected wet wood and practiced making a fire in the rain. Luckily for the Owls it had stopped raining, but the wood was still wet. The Owls branched off and took responsibility for different parts of the fire prep from making tinder, kindling, chopping up a dried out and abandoned Christmas tree to preparing the dandilion bannock and freshly foraged salad. It was a feast!

To wrap up the day the Owls had a competitive game of football; were victorious once in untangling the human knot; defeated the second time and ended with weaving a yarn spider web for their debrief.

Ask your Owl if they think these are Morels or False Morels.
