Owls, March 21

The teachers today decided to make almost an entire new plan, due to the elements gifting us with a third teacher - snow! What did we learn from snow today?

We experienced it's cushioning effects! A new game, called Gimme Gimme Gimme, was played by the Owls to great success. It it like soccer, and rugby, with a bit of football thrown in. There is tackling, which is fun to experience in this much snow, and a favourite of this group! It is a self-refereeing game, which the group found hard the first time we tried it. This is a group where opinions abound, and listening can be challenging! This time around, they asked for a teacher to be the final ref, but that the group would make decisions together. It was much more successful this time!

We learned that there are different kinds of snow. This snow was so thick we struggled to walk through it in places! When we went to our favourite extreme sledding area, we climbed a steep 'crack' and kept slipping down; this snow was powedery, and hard to get purchase on! So, we set up ropes, practiced our knots and climbed like a mountaineer!

The snow also taught us silence; there is a quality to falling snow that absorbs the sounds; at times we could experience a deep quiet that was unusual. the snow also leaves messages for us; a group of quiet 'hunters' went looking for tracks and signs of animals in the fresh snow, surprised to find that most animals were silent too!

Hazel did a wonderful job leading the Animal Game, and introducing some new concepts (highway, mother nature, adaptations). Thanks Hazel for leading us!

There is no school next week; see you on April 4th!
