Bee Boxes Complete!
Bee Boxes Complete!

Today's class was all about Communication! We started the day with a game of cardio charades, practicing our speed drawing and creative communication skills while physically warming up! The snow began as we shifted to playing Boggled (our newly invented game from last week). This week competition was fierce!

The group challenge of the day was maneuvering a golf ball balanced between ropes. The Owls so quickly figured out the basics of lifting, lowering and moving with the ball that we upped the challenge and made it our goal to transport the balanced ball UP the hill to our backpacks to be deposited in the shopping cart we found in the park this morning! A few challenging moments when the ball got away on us but ultimately, success was ours with the great communication between the team!

Some free time this morning was spent playing on the slack line and building a new fort which became the base for a creative game this afternoon before pick up!

Lunch inside to warm up, followed by introducing our big project of the day, building Bee Boxes! This is a Citizen Science Project and a wonderful way to engage with the natural world! For more info check out the website! https://www.albertanativebeecouncil.ca/bumble-bee-box-monitoring

Measuring the bee boxes
Measuring the bee boxes

The Bee Boxes were the ultimate testament to the Owls' growth in communication. With less tools than kids, there was a great deal of sharing and communication of needs required for everyone to be able to put together their box. We practiced measurement skills, saw technique (thank you Ms. Rikia for your sharp saw) and learned how to pre-drill holes, how to change bits in a drill, where to place screws so that our wood wouldn't split and how to install a hinge. Every student's personality came out in their boxes, both in the process of making them and in the final products. Ask your Owl what they plan to do with their box!

The day wrapped up back at the fort with a bit more free-time and creative play!

Another wonderful day with the Owls today! Thank you, Ms. Elena, for joining us for the day today!
