Owls February 20

Reflecting on our day in the sunshine!
Reflecting on our day in the sunshine!

The Owls had an adventurous day at Forest School this past week! We started the day by exploring the ice flow before tackling the journey to the top of the hill and traversing across to the teardrop. Here, we found sunshine and beautiful city views out to the mountains, a happy surprise after all the cold. We took a snack and rest break as there was some low energy after that big climb!

We worked on our communication skills this morning while playing some improv games with Ms. Heidi. Remembering multiple patterns stretched our brains, but the crew loved Convergence- a game where we used word association to try to eventually come up with the same word!

This was followed by a rambunctious game of Gimme Gimme Gimme, teamwork and passing skills were at an all-time high! We enjoyed sledding and building snowmen as the day warmed up.

After a quick lunch at the cabin, we returned to the bottom of our sled hill to find the snow melting into perfect snowball-making snow. With a trench running down the center, a game of snowball trench traverse challenge began with multiple iterations on the rules to make it harder, more fair, etc. Ask your Owl about the game! The Owls took some impressive initiative in these rule changes and focused on honesty throughout the entire process. Ms Rikia was the most accurate sniper of the day! At the same time, the tool circle was a place of some great inventions, repairing a staff that had been broken and carving a double-sided leather poker.

We trudged back to the top of the hill for a journal reflection, representing the hard, awesome and meh (okay) parts of our day with colours and discovering that multiple emotions could be present during each activity.

Our final challenge of the day was descending the slope we started the day on- then ice, now turned to mud. This was chaotic and had some moments of fear. We will be further debriefing our descent at this week's class and opening up some group discussions around how we manage risks, especially as they change throughout our day. Sometimes, our best lessons arise from mistakes made.

We look forward to our field trip this week to Big Hill Springs!
