Yay to our first day of class! We loved seeing the old Foxes and inviting new foxes into our pack. We started the day with introductions, reconnections and a fun game of card tag and Dolphin Frizbee. The Foxes are all about the team games and were competitive, but fair!
Moving on to the hammer toss we started out with a slinging a stuffy. The class really got into the physics of how and when to release the rope so that the stuffy would land on the pathway. Once we had a little technique down the Foxes went off to build their own hammer and rope. Some picked heavy wood, some made balls out of grass and sticks. Everyone tried out their own. After we launched into a tournament...all using one hammer so it was fair. The class split into athletes, reporters, judges, a film crew. We built a safety spectator zone. The chosen hammer was a heavy log. All the foxes got into their roles.
Settling down into lunch the foxes went into little groups to catch up from the summer or develop new friendships. We made an offering/decoy to the wasps, but it was more of a wandering lunch to steer clear of the wasps.
After lunch we had free time. The tool circle was brought out. Weapons were made. Imaginative games were played. Crickets and ladybugs were caught and observed.
We tied up the afternoon with a walk to the orchard to pick fruit. The apples were a little worse for wear so we picked pears and made a crumble. Using knife skills the Foxes took turns slicing the pears. We mixed the ingredients and cooked over a backcountry stove. While the crumble was cooking some of the foxes made hammers with apples and worked on their hammer toss skills. The apples were the best so far! A game of mushy apple baseball was also sparked. Theo also captured the attention of the foxes with a scary tale of three sisters in an orchard.
We wrapped up the day with delicious crumble and a quick debrief before heading back for pick up.
