From Maryam:

Hi! Maryam here, writing the blog for this week.

We started our morning with a variety of activities. First, we challenged our strength with some really fun Inuit games, then moved on to chopping our wood for the fire we would make in the afternoon. Next, we tried to hoist someone up a tree using a couple pulleys and a harness. This was a really fun challenge and we got it working pretty well! For the afternoon, we went back to the cabin for lunch and a surprise!! Ms.Lea and Ms.Dawn brought out some cupcakes for us, as we were eating them we found little pieces of foil inside. Most of us thought the teachers left something in the batter by mistake and politely put the foil pieces to the side. Safiya’s curiosity got the better of her and she decided to see what it was. She opened the foil to find a surprise message…the Coyotes will be going to Elk Lake for a camping trip in April!!!!!!!  After our exciting surprise we made our way to Sammy’s park and brought everything we would need to make our practice dessert before our competition. We made two fires and constructed a mini stove that would be used for baking our desserts. Each team worked hard and the end result were 3 delicious desserts: apple crumble, churros, and mallowmelt. Good job, Coyotes!

From Lea:

Hello! As you've heard, we are planning the Elk Lakes Cabin trip for April 27/28. That means that will be no school April 30. The main costs of the trip will be the Cabin itself ($30 each) and gas. There is also the transportation; we may need to travel in three cars, with a parent dropping us off and picking us up. Is there a volunteer or two to do this?

We have time for the Coyotes to engage in some fundraising for the trip. They are experts at running Mini Forest Schools;; they could run some classes and charge for them, with us present. They could make items and sell them...the possibilities are endless! They can bring ideas this week. Very exciting!

We will take a break from the Iron Chef challenge and come back to it when everyone is present keep those ideas percolating! And thank you for all the support in the materials you've sent!

Homework:

There were two moments today when we had a science question we couldn't answer, and we're determined to find out!

  1. Using the pulleys, at one point we had 3 pulleys in action. A little birdie told us that the pulley has to move with the rope in order to take off the force...is this true? It did seem like it? Can anyone explain how pulleys decrease effort next week?

  2. The system we used to hoist up into a tree!

  3. When heating cooking oil to make churros, we wondered if we could reuse the oil, or if at one point we even had to replace it mid-cooking. Does the oil change chemically as it is being heated, and how? What does this mean for the use of the oil? We love science!
