Cottontails, March 5th

upstreamforestschool

Spring and ice fun is here! The Cottontails took a little field trip to Prince's Island to explore some new territory and check out the ice. We saw some ice flows while walking over the bridge and were excited to check out the banks of the river. Don't worry, we were never over water - just the rocky beach.

First we ate lunch and read a little from the Wild Robot. Then we fed the nuthatches. Everyone had a bird land on them. The minimum times was four and the maximum was 21 times! This took patience and stillness. While everyone was feeding the birds, we also set up the rope climb for those who were interested.

Then we headed to the beach. Before venturing on the ice we had a safety talk about possible dangers and we walked the boundary of where we were allowed all together. Once buisness was done the Cottontails fell into the fun of exploring ice. There were three different types of ice found. There were cystals, shards, slush and a large chunk 'harvested' to carve.

On the walk back some of the Cottontails wanted to take the high trail along the bluff. Since they were in sight of the teachers we made a plan of where we would meet and that whoever arrived there first would wait for the whole class. The beginnings of map reading and orienteering. The Cottontails did great!
