Squirrels - Jan 16

upstreamforestschool

The squirrels started off their day with some sledding. We had a new sled to try which proved tricky but some of the squirrels enjoyed trying them. The challenge today was sliding down the hill and grabbing a stuffed animal on the way by. You earned points every time you got one. Some of the squirrels got 60 or 70 points!

We also read a book called Solutions for cold feet and other little problems during snack. The girl and her dog in the book had lots of creative solutions, some of them we even use. Ask your squirrels what their favorite solution from the book is.

Then we went on an adventure! The squirrels climbed the bluff, stopping at a few different spots. We found a manhole to climb on and a tree that still had leaves on it. There was also a fallen tree that some of us went over, others went under and some kids went around like we were on a bear hunt. Then Ms. Jessie showed us a secret flat spot on the hill with a good view. Then Calliope found a secret den, which led to a secret passage we had to explore. All the squirrels liked climbing through the bushes and then sliding down the hill.

At the bottom of the hill we played with the parachute and hid underneath it from Ms. Jessie, but she sniffed us out. We finished our adventure by walking on a bridge over a little frozen stream and walking to the cabin to warm up. At the cabin Ms. Melanie showed us a guessing game the squirrels loved. Ms. Mel would read a description of something and the kids called out what it was, if you guessed it first you got the card with a picture of it. We also started a project we will be working on for the next few classes. Each of the squirrels worked on hammering nails into a wood cookie. We will wrap string around the nails to create a design next class.

It was a team effort to climb a slippery tree, Calliope helped pull others up from a secure branch and everyone helped. Then it was the end of our day, thanks for the great snow day squirrels!
