You never know what will happen at Forest School! Based on our adventures in Edworthy Park last class, I saw a lot of interest in mountaineering. So, coming armed with ropes, carabiners and harnesses, I asked them to point us in the direction of the steepest hill. Back to the Cabin we went, for the rope climb!
This time, we had ropes and used a self-belaying system using the prusik knot (get them to show you!); they enjoyed jumping around the hill knowing the rope was holding them. Soon, there were a few forts on the go; a West Mountain, a North Mountain and a Riverview. I always enjoy seeing where the teacher-directed play will pour over into the child-chosen play. Here it was!
A war began between two forts, and rules of engagement were needed. There was great interest in using the dirt on the slope as ammo, but the slope needs all the dirt it can get (to avoid another 'slope failure'!); so they invented new ways to throw things at each other. They might need a shower tonight!
Others were using the materials found in the space, namely charcoal, to create paints and try some portraiture. Lala led the way with some instruction in how to paint people; she will give us another lesson next week! The yarn was also useful in creating beautiful designs with sticks. With the warmer weather comes some creativity!
