Owls, April 4th

upstreamforestschool

Our plans for the day were once again kiboshed by the wonderful snow, which we were all more than excited for! This time we got a west/eastcoast type of snow, which so rarely falls in Calgary we had to make the most of it!

We started the day with making a covered throne for Tony - the owner of Franz Dof Gallery. We invited him to a game of Gimme Gimme Gimme so that we can present him with a proposition, which he agreed to! We have decided to auction off the Owls felt art (stay tuned for details) and Tony has generously agreed to donate the 40% commision the gallery would usually take to a charity of our choice! The biggest contenders are AARCS, Tree Canada and to help sponsor somone to attend Upstream.

After the game of Gimme Gimme Gimme, Tucky convinced everyone to help him push a giant snowball up the bluff so that we could chase it down like the Norwegians (?) do with cheese wheels. It was a great effort and tons of fun. Especially when the ball exploded with Machen in front of it and Huxley riding it.

This evolved into making an impressive snow fort that included a discarded Christmas tree, gnome and penguin snow molds and lots of snow. We spent the rest of the morning working on the fort to make it invincible and then trying to destroy the snow fort with giant snowballs and rocks. It was a physically exhausting morning hauling rocks and snow up the bluff.

We ended the morning with a geologist dig in the snow fort looking for rocks, pine cones and surprise chocolate eggs!

Lunch was quiet....everyone was pretty tired, which made for storytelling and lovely listening to one another as the Owls shared their most gruesome injuries and trips to the children's hospital.

After lunch we headed out for another fun slide down zombie hill before gathering to learn a new game that introduced orienteering. It was fast paced but also took memory and observation. Well done Owls! After the game the Owls hid pylons and made an orienteering map for another Owl to use and find the pylon. This is just the beginning - we will be learning orienteering skills into the spring.

To wrap up our day we went on a tracking hunt. Trying to decipher between dog and coyote tracks we went for a walk and Bean led us to the top of the bluff where it is rumoured there are coyote dens. We didn't find any coyote tracks, but we found a beautiful view of the bow river and downtown where we settled down for a sit spot before racing down to meet parents in time for the end of the day.
