Lea's Training Journey...so far

upstreamforestschool

Hello everyone! I wanted to update you on my learnings so far, and let you know what the future looks like! Thank you for your patience if you have a class with substitute Forest School teachers! They have been wonderful and I've heard so much about the adventures they've been up to!

The past 16 days consisted of 4 days of camping at a pre-trip planning centre (a camp outside of Comox, Vancouver Island), an 11-day sea kayaking trip (in Desolation Sound) and two days of debriefing the experience. We learned about risk management, experiential education, Indigenous ways of knowing, mental health first aid and of course, reading marine charts! While some of this learning was not new to me, the experiential trip and how it was led was eye-opening.

On the trip, we were encouraged to push past our comfort zones as a group, and to rely on each other. I see this as the foundation of outdoor learning, something we embrace at Forest School. Firstly, it was so excellent to feel what it feels like to be cold and wet for days at a time; this is what some of our children feel like! Now I know how much it can take over your brain, and how learning is impeded when our basic needs are not met. Experiencing it has given me more empathy for our learners! But I also saw first hand how challenges can be overcome with humour, teamwork and determination, all brought about by good communication in the group.

While on the trip I earned certifications from the Outdoor Council of Canada (overnight field leader, maps, compass, paddling, to name a few) and will use these in taking our children on more field trips! I also hope to continue the training with Wilderness First Aid and another guide certification in the spring.

The last part of my training includes 'class room portions'; one is next week, and there is one in November. I am bringing back my learning to all the teachers so we can all benefit from the teachings, which is both current and timeless!

Thank you for your support of my learning!
