Foxes, October 15th

upstreamforestschool

The Foxes are determined to catch a squirrel, but they could use some practice in tracking, stalking and glassing - where you wait in stillness and silence for your prey to come to you. We started out with a game of Predator/Prey to get our bodies moving and our minds thinking quickly. We also introduced a new game called Mantracker that we are refining to work for our little group and on the bluff. It evolved from more of a chasing game to a stalking/tracking game that we hope to develop more.

Early in the day we came together to talk about what we know about the history of the bluff. We shared what we knew about Land Awknowledgments and who were the peoples here before us. We also went through a bit of a history of the bluff since Calgary was made into a city and who were the people that settled here. We brainstormed who we share the bluff with today: the squirrels, insects, magpies, grass, coyotes, dogs, dog walkers, invasive species like caragana and creeping bell.

Eager to share their weapon making skills the Foxes visited with the Rabbits to teach them how to make bow and arrows and crossbows. Some of the Rabbits were super keen and the Foxes all joined in leading them in making their chosen weapon.

The majority of the afternoon was spent in trying to stalk, track and 'hunt' squirrels. The Foxes gave some squirrels a workout. They also looked for signs of squirrels and found a few nests, which brought us to end the day in the bike track.
