Foxes, November 13th

Due to technical difficulties this post is from two Tuesdays ago when we had special guest, Mr. Jan who is paramedic working on YYC ambulances and is part of the Public Safety Unit where he works across Canada for major emergencies. Mr. Jan taught the Foxes how to splint broken bones. We practiced on each other and tried to do splints on ourselves. We also learned what happens to the bones when they break and how to tie splints to relieve the pressure and pain. Mr. Jan also taught us a fun way to drag a patient if they need moving.

Mr. Jan taught us how to use tourniquets and how to make a tourniquet - even how to apply one on yourself. We learned about different type of bleeds, when a tourniquet is needed and the dangers of tourniquets. Lastly we learned what to do with an impaled object, why we don't remove them and how to secure them.

To put all the new knowledge to use, Mr. Jan ran scenarios for the Foxes to manage. The scenarios were a little wilder than what he is used to encountering, but really one should know what to do if there is an evil Samurai running around and you have to treat the wounded and get them to safety.

For the afternoon we set up a squirrels training course to get the Foxes fast, nimble and well balanced.
