It was a beautiful, warm, winter day for the squirrels! We took the wet, sticky snow as an opportunity to do lots of building. Today we built homes for all the stuffed animals and there were lots of creative approaches. Some of the kids buried animals with warm blankets, others dug comfy dens and some shovelled out a house. Then we finished with a tour of all the houses, cozy hideouts and party houses.
Today was also the perfect day for fire because we can take off our mittens without getting cold hands. The kids experimented with lighting matches and seeing what burns the best. Cotton balls, dryer lint, wood shavings and pieces of wood, all of them we could catch on fire with a match but the cotton balls burnt the best. We also made our own little fires in a tin and practiced feeding them little bits of wood. Then we made a big fire and roasted bananas and our snacks on them. We lost a few bananas to the fire, but the squirrels did a good job finding roasting sticks and then keeping an eye on them so they didn't burn.
In free time the squirrels teamed up and made a huge snowman. They worked together to decorate it and roll the big snowballs. Some of the group also made a small snowman so the snowman had a snow friend. The kids even rolled a snowball for a step so they could climb up to work on the face. It was the highlight of the day because of the amazing building snow. Thanks squirrels!
