Owls, September 26th

upstreamforestschool

It seems like the Thursday Owls class is going to be the day this year where we get the biggest swings in weather. There is always one day of the week every year that has the most extreme weather. If anything the Owls are hearty enough and ready for what the winter will bring!

This class was a mixture of a number of physical activities, team challenges and individual challenges that took patience, negotations and fine motor skills. After revisiting some of the Owls old favourite games we introduced lashing through a team challenge. The older kids already knew the ins and outs of lashing and were helpful in getting the younger kids involved and making sure their ropes were secure. The class was split into two teams and had a race transporting one of their classmates on a seat that they made to and end zone. There were a few tumbles, but everyone was pleased with what they made.

Still working with ropes and knots, Hukley taught the class how to make paracord bracelets. This was a true test of patience. In the end everyone made one and they were used during free time in a game of forts, clans and stores.

In the afternoon we tested out doing our sit spot after lunch instead of the end of the day. The Owls were tasked with sketching leaves in their journals and then using water colours to fill in the sketches. The sun had come out and it seemed that everyone was quite happy to settle down and work quietly in their journals.

After a game of rock races (a Blackfoot game) and spinning apples, the rest of the afternoon was free play. During unstructured time the Owls are working on inclusive play, how to ask to join and how to welcome someone in to play if an imaginary game has already been established.
