Snow much fun. And fires!

ree

This week the Owls revelled in the recently fallen snow, showing their great energetic ingenuity in developing sliding methods: experimenting on speed and control efficiency with various fabrics and surfaces - which fabric was best for fastest and longest; which made it easier to navigate the obstacles (one of which was a rather uncooperative and unpredictable 6 yr old target).

Continuing our Hatchet-themed survival, Miss Rikia became the source of mysterious clues - it was a great pleasure to see the Owls working together on a real scavenge for food, and succeeding in finding some morsels of chocolate treasure. Dividing it up equally was quite a mathematical challenge, both Miss Rikia and Miss Sally benefitting from the difficulty of dividing 6 up into 9 pieces (thanks generous owls!).

Back to the cabin for a bit of a lunchtime warm up, and also to pick up our...fire supplies!

Slip sliding on the ice - who needs skates? It was heartwarming to see our Owls inspired by the slipperyness into inventing all sorts of different games.

The focus and resilience of the fire starters was impressive: preparing tinder and kindling gave us all an opportunity to put some of the tool circle skills the Owls have been working so hard on into practice. Starting their own little fires was less challenging for some, who were generous in their empathy and support to help others succeed. It was hard work for some, but with some dogged determination, all succeeded in adding their flames to the bigger fire. Marshmallows all round, thanks to Aspen and Avaleigh - and I think we all agreed it turned out that chestnuts are much easier to peel and more delicious once they've been roasted in a fire of your own making!

Less of an uphill struggle when you've got a friend heaving at the other end of the rope!

Some sensible grippers, which were so efficient one got stuck in the snow!
