Squirrels, Monday Feb 26th

upstreamforestschool

Walking up the hill to our spot the icy wind was on our faces making it uncomfortable so we tried walking backwards up the path. It took a little getting used to and a few falls but then we raced up, backwards running, to the orange barriers. The next challenge was to try walking backwards up the pile of gravel near our spot. This was steeper and more slippy but the Squirrels were determined to get to the top and enjoyed the run, forwards, down the other side.

A new sliding spot led us to discover a fort and a swing in the trees. Jono and Priya immediately started to find sticks to add to the fort's roof. After a while Priya chose to work on her bedroom in the fort laying a wall of sticks in a patch of trees making a smaller den. Breanne arrived during construction and we learned she had cleverly followed our sled tracks to find where we were. Full of energy Breanne found a cardboard box she decided was the TV and we all worked together to move a thick, long log which was going to be a sofa bench. The Squirrels thought it wasn't quite right (maybe too long) as they wanted to cut it shorter. We explained we hadn't brought any saws with us, which led the Squirrels to tell us what we should bring next week to make the fort even better. It's always welcomed when the students give us suggestions on how we can help them extend their play and learning!

When toes started to get too cold we made our way to the cabin to start our art piece to show at the Franz Dopf Art Gallery exhibit called WILD. I will let the photos show you what amazing art the Squirrels have created so far. We will be working on this next week to get it finished for the opening on Saturday March 9, 11-5pm. We hope you are able to visit the gallery on that day to celebrate the opening.

At the end of class we explored the ice slide across the road from the cabin. Priya and Jono were keen to explore up the slope and clambered up to the source of the spring water, where they found a beautiful frozen spider's web. They encouraged Breanne to climb up so they could show her. We think there'll be more exploring in this wood in the future.
