We are excited to have Soren and Kellen back in our Squirrels class. They brought lots of energy for a physical day of snow play and making fires. We also appreciated the stories of what happens when you lick a cold hammer and Soren going over a waterfall in Beliz!
We started out our day with a game of coyote and mouse along the pathway. Once at our spot we had a little free time to explore the area, looking for new or old animal tracks and to break some of the coloured ice blocks that were there from last week. While the Squirrels explored we set up a fairy wand station. We had some lovely red willow branches that the Squirrels trimmed using gardening shears. Attention was made to being safe with the shears. After wrapping our wands we moved into snack time and a story. During snack time the temperature dropped and we started getting cold toes and noses so we set off to find some wood to make a fire. While gathering wood we found a fantastic snow slide going into the bike track and we spent a good amount of time climbing ropes and sliding down. We worked on sliding safety, communicating with each other when it was safe to slide and paying attention to our bodies and other people's space.
After warming up with sledding and climbing we rejoined to light a fire. The Squirrels worked on their match lighting skills. To some we have yet to light a match and transfer it to our fairy fires, but the Squirrels are persistent and getting more comfortable with starting their fires and feeding our communal fire.
At the end of the day we had a sit spot with eggs. Each Squirrel took a raw egg and found a quiet spot. For some Squirrels it was the first time cracking an egg and that was cause for lots of joy. We gave the Squirrels quiet time to observe their eggs...what happened when the egg cracked......what was the yolk and whites of the egg like....did the eggs freeze when mixed with snow.....were they stinky?
