Foxes, Jan 21

upstreamforestschool

What a wild day with the Foxes! With some children missing, we ha a smaller crew to explore with, but explore we did!

The trip to the ice caves was educational; Ms. Rikia told us the ice needed to be 4 inches for one person to go on it, and 6 for a group to go on it. So we checked the creek ice, and found the sunny parts were too slushy. The shading parts, however, were thick enough for us! We followed the creek to the ice caves, which were magical.

Some of us enjoyed making ice crystals to put in an exhibit, and others wanted to climb the frozen waterfall. We put a rope up at the top of the waterfall, and used it to try to comb up (very hard!) and down with an ATC, a climbing device (much easier!). The colours in the ice we broke off were interesting, both yellow and greens were present.

We headed to the visitor centre for lunch, where we did a scavenger hunt in their gallery. After lunch, we hiked to the fire pits; preparing the fire was interesting in the wind! We were able to find some dry deadwood, and one very long stick (Sitcky!). We are becoming experts in making popcorn over the fire, with new people wanting to try every day.

Next week, fun for, can your child choose a popcorn topping they would like to bring to share? It's a popcorn topping potluck!

Feb 4: Field Trip to Heart Creek Bunker

For this trip, we need a little extra time to include travel time. Please come to the Cabin for 8:15, so we can leave at 8:30. We will leave the hike at 2:30 to be back at the Cabin for 3:30. Make sure your child's backpack is comfortable (a small hiking backpack, perhaps?) and that they have water, maybe a tea, and extra food, as they'll be hungry!
