Choosing this hike was a process in and of itself! We researched the hike and found it was quite a bit more than we had bargained for! But we also knew, based on some being there in person and reading others' blogs, that there was an option for us that was doable. We loved this fact vs. rumour discussion!
There was still some trepidation as we approached the hike. On the teachers' side, we came extra prepared, as we knew this hike was harder than we've done before. We also knew the weather might be unpredictable at the top. The Chimney was something we were going to have to scout out when we got there, knowing how much conditions change. After we both checked it out, we decided that taking 2 at a time was appropriate; it still held risk, but we determined that we thought they could manage it with a slow pace and guidance. Here's what the Coyotes thought!
Mika:
"The coyotes really rose to the challenge! I think Yamnuska was challenging in the best way- a few different ways, which really let us play to our strengths and help others, and for some of us, push ourselves out of our comfort zone. It was also our first hike, and summit of the year, definitely a great accomplishment, and it was super fun having winter at the top and trying our hand at scree/scrambling! Also, the great view on and off all the way up makes it all the more rewarding. Thank you Ms. Lea and Ms. Dawn for arranging the hike, taking and driving us! " {Our pleasure, you're all angels!}
Lucy:
"The drive-in was enjoyable; we sang and chatted.
Yamnuska was quite the sight to behold when we arrived, pretty mental that some people rock climb the sheer mountainside.
The hike itself was icy, snowy – more towards the top – and muddy at times. Reminded me of another hike we did last year, where my shoes and socks also got completely soaked through.
At the beginning of the strenuous trek, I was really trying not to walk in the snow, to save my feet. But by the end on the way down, I was using those shoes like they were snow boots! Rolling, sliding, and cartwheeling in the snow was so joyous and freeing.
All the snacks people brought and made were a treat for the tastebuds, and I thoroughly relished throwing Goldfish pretzel crackers into the air hitherto catching them in my mouth.
All in all, I’m glad we got to go into the chimney and climb over the slippery rocks. The valley bowl with the mountains all around on the other side of Yamnuska were awe-striking. The wind was no joke as well! And of course, it was still quite amusing when people slipped on the snowy trail, myself included… "
Maryam:
"Yamnuska was really steep but taking short breaks every 10 min really helped. I also think that doing Yamnuska made me realize that I am able to do steep hikes and I would love to try a harder one next time."
